About the Author

Sam Murphy is one of the United Kingdom's leading fitness and health experts, contributing to Health and Fitness, Healthy Living, and Financial Times. She is the author of five books, including Run for Life, which has been published in 10 languages.

Murphy is a training consultant to the London Marathon, Nike, and Adidas. She is a regular speaker at conventions and conferences on fitness and health. With over 17 years of experience as a runner, Murphy has raced distances from 3,000 meters to 100 miles and is a 14-time marathon runner.

Murphy lives in Clapton, London, and enjoys running, walking, and camping.

Sarah Connors is a physiotherapist who specializes in running injuries. She is the physiotherapist for the British athletics team. Connors has worked with British athletes since 1993 and attended two Olympic Games. She has been a competitive runner since the age of 11.

Connors is married with three children and enjoys running, skiing, and spending time with her kids.

running better now?

An easy read, covers most aspects needed whether you're starting out, or training for a marathon. Good section on injuries including how to get back into it after being injured or sick. Doesn't include a training plan for a marathon/half marathon but guides you into how to make your own. Maybe could of had more on this. Good nutrition section-more than just your regular eat this, drink fluids.. Good research basis for what they say. Talks about which types of cross training are good and relate to running. Much easier to read and includes a broad wealth of information relating to running compared to some other books I've read.

Great book. Great design. I bought this for my wife who wants to train for a half marathon, but hasn't run much previously. Running Well should ensure both her success and safety. Very accessible and informative!

A running resource that is a must for beginners to intermediate runners

I swear I didn't know this book was on the Oprah Book Club list until after I read it. It is an extremely good resource for the novice to intermediate runner. It covers all facets of keeping your body safe when running, hence the name, in a manner that makes you want to run with confidence. The authors illustrate stretches and strengthening techniques that are easy and work exceptionally well. Additionally, the troubleshooting pain sections are an incredible wealth of knowledge that assist greatly in isolating the cause of an injury and how to heal, recovery, and rebuild from the injury. I strained my Achilles and thought that I would be out of running for at least a month. Nope. I followed the book and was back running, without pain, in 7 days. Available now at your local library. I actually had to buy this book...Yes, Oprah is right.

About the Author

Dr Jonathan Wilkinson qualified from the University of Liverpool Medical School in 1999. He completed further training in General Medicine and Accident and Emergency Medicine, and attained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002. He went on to train in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in Nottingham, and attained Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2005. During 2006-2007, he was Thoracic Anaesthesia Fellow at the Nottingham University Hospitals. He is currently Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Northampton General Hospital.

Stephen H. Pennefather MRCP FRCA is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. He qualified from Cape Town University and trained in general medicine and anaesthesia in South Africa and the UK. He has wide research interests in cardiothoracic anaesthesia.

Robert A. McCahon MBChB, FRCA is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Queen's Medical Centre. He qualified from Manchester University and trained in Wales, Australia, and finally Nottingham. His clinical commitments include anaesthesia for trauma, maxillo-facial surgery, and spinal surgery. He has research interests in cardio-respiratory modelling in ARDS and medical education.

This book is fantastic, because it begins with the basic theory of acoustical physics, and it develops some chapters on ultrasound application. Great opportunity to learn with Dr. Cobbold!

CUBA

From Nicaragua to Italy, I have tried different blends, sizes and manufactures. However, I always come back to the Cuban cigar. Flavours are always prevalent and various: cedar, wood, caramel, apple. When I worked in a Cuban cigar store this book was thrust into my lap by the manager. Read it, he said. Read it through, then read it again. I learned the maturation process, the curing, the blending. All of this in the Aging section, a great beginning to the rest of the book. Dynamic. Min Ron Nee, in all his experience takes us into the country of Cuba, its cigars, its history. I learned so much from this book. I hear an updated version is in the works. How they can make this better is beyond me, however I am looking forward to the experience.

Truly Encyclopedic

If you have the slightest passion for cigars, Cuba, or history this tome (and this hefty works qualifies as a tome) is not to be missed.

The amazing quality, both visually and textually, is almost overwhelming. I can't think of a reason not to give it five stars. The excellence of the book itself, as well as the attention to detail and completeness contained within it is unsurpassed. That rich detail in the descriptions of the path each of the marks has taken along with the tasting and aging notes are so evocative that you can almost smell the tobacco. No expense was spared in the putting together of this work and it shows from cover to cover.

The only drawback is that the author is focused on aged cigars, and this book was written on the border between the Habanos of old and the updated Altadis Habanos. So much of the flavor profiles and descriptions of the marks and vitolas do not apply to anything the average smoker might encounter at a shop.

This should not stop anyone from obtaining this work, as it is a testament to the history and quality of Habanos and the passion it evokes in those who love them.

THE BEST OF ALL

Don't let the bland cover fool you. I own about 20 books on Cuban cigars, including all the best ones, but this one is the best of them all. I was lucky enough to order mine when they first came out and it was somewhere in the $50-80 range. Certainly the current price of $500+ is eye-watering. But it's not only the best of it's kind, it's truly an awesome book in every way. The depth of scholarship, the range of topics, the details and the incredible photography make it a masterpiece. I also strongly recommend "The New Connoisseur's Guide to Havana Cigars" by Gerard Pere & Fils and "The Havana Cigar: Cuba's Finest" by Charles del Todesco." All of these books are out of print, but still available on Amazon.

She shows how Jews experience a kind of double vision that comes from racial middleness: on the one hand, marginality with regard to whiteness; on the other, whiteness and belonging with regard to blackness.

Class and gender are key elements of race-making in American history. Brodkin suggests that this country's racial assignment of individuals and groupsconstitutes an institutionalized system of occupational and residential segregation, is a key element in misguided public policy, and serves as a pernicious foundational principle in the construction of nationhood. Alternatives available to non-white and alien "others" have been either to whiten or to be consigned to an inferior underclass unworthy of full citizenship. The American ethnoracial map-who is assigned to each of these poles-is continually changing, although the binary of black and white is not. As a result, the structure within which Americans form their ethnoracial, gender, and class identities is distressingly stable. Brodkin questions the means by which Americans construct their political identities and what is required to weaken the hold of this governing myth.

Brodkin (Caring by the Hour), a professor of anthropology at UCLA, synthesizes much recent scholarship to assess the shifting notions of race?and changing objects of racism?in the U.S. She points out that racial inferiority has been ascribed to waves of immigrants only when they were used as unskilled labor. She notes how "Jewish whiteness became American whiteness" after WWII, when Jews began to speak as whites and Jewish intellectuals "contrasted themselves with a mythic blackness." A self-described secular Jew situated in leftist academic circles, Brodkin somewhat awkwardly weaves familial reflections into her otherwise academic book. While intriguing, Brodkin's treatment is hardly exhaustive. She argues that her New York parents and grandparents "lived in a time when Jews were not white"; however, that focus on Jewish racial self-assignment obscures the somewhat murkier role of Jews in the South, as well as those who ran shops or provided social services in the inner cities of the North. She repeats her overall thesis?that racism and the construction of racial identity is the foundational principle of American identity and American capitalism?over and over, but her argument is no more convincing for all the repetition.

paper 0-8135-2590-X How Jews came, during the last three decades, to be viewed, by themselves and others, as white (having previously been considered not quite white) is the focus of this equally interesting and flawed study. By white anthropologist Brodkin (Univ. of Calif., Los Angeles; Caring by the Hour, not reviewed) means not only skin color but also an ethnic-cultural identity (something connoted by such phrases as ``WASP'' and ``mainstream American'') as well as factors such as class and labor status. Through anecdotal, sociological, historical, literary, and other cultural material, she traces the decline of American Jews' working-class values, the loss of a distinctive language (Yiddish), the development of left-liberal politics, and general ethnic cohesiveness. Brodkin has some fascinating insights into the interplay between Jewish ethnicity and gender. For example, she observes that the stereotypes of the smothering Jewish mother and of the Jewish-American Princess may well represent Jewish men's projections on to Jewish women of their own ambivalence about assimilating into the materially alluring but often culturally and spiritually shallow postwar mainstream American culture. Unfortunately, Brodkin's perspective, which draws heavily on ``African American, neo-Marxist and critical race theory,'' neglects entirely or scants a number of key factors in the growing acceptance of Jews as full-fledged whites, such as the post-Holocaust rejection of the concept of a ``Jewish race.'' Brodkin also errs in other ways, such as romanticizing the degree of ``reciprocity'' (ethnic cohesion and mutual aid) found among Lower East Side immigrant Jews. While containing a great deal of interesting material from several disciplines, including popular culture, Brodkin's book ultimately is unsatisfying because it rests on too narrow a theoretical base and contains too many unwarranted generalizations. Thus, the author fails to sustain the view that the story of the Jews' successful assimilation into ``white culture,'' during an era of persistent discrimination against those who are now known as ``people of color,'' reflects something important about the role of race in American life. -- Copyright �1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. A Respectable Effort

Despite my low rating, I found this book to be very interesting and an important statement on the dual-identity that exists among Jewish-Americans. This book could also serve as an important resource to anyone who holds an interest in the changing social definitions of race & class during late 19th century/20th century America, and how the Jewish community fared amongst those changes. Dr. Brodkin did an excellent job at finding published examples to show this changing opinion of Jews. She also made a wise choice in choosing to zero in on one of the main factors of American mobility which is family economics. In this aspect, this book should find it's way to any reading list pertaining to Jewish-American social/class identity studies.

On the other hand, I am disappointed in the writing style and tone of this book; although she did seem to "warn" the reader of this beforehand in the Acknowledgments section when she admitted that when she began her research, she did not intend to write specifically about Jewishness. That statement sort of set the stage for a pretty incoherent collection of information that is loosely worked into the book's intended purpose. For example, in Chapter 1., she devotes pages to statistics and descriptions of racist policies the FHA used to keep Black people out of suburbia. Although this information is interesting, how does it relate to Jewish people? In a much smaller span, Dr. Brodkin could have demonstrated the FHA's discrimination and then move on to how that affected Jewish migration into suburbia. She does a similar thing again in when she goes into detail about inequality in skilled labor in reference to Mexicans and Black people. Again, interesting, but there is too much information about a subject the book is not supposed to address. I understand that her point is to give the reader some background on how your racial identification affected your employment, but when your working text is only around 150 pp., it just detracts from the overall theme of the book.

I was also surprised at how Dr. Brodkin choose to sporadically intersperse her own experiences and family history into a book that had so much scholarly research. If she would have chosen to present the personal aspects of the topic in a more organized way (perhaps in separate chapters), it would have been much more natural to read. Also, I got the feeling that she was over-romanticizing and referencing the African-American experience simply because she herself had a history of civil-rights activism and admiration for Black culture. Again, although I find this very interesting, it only detracts from what you are trying to find out from this book...and that's the Jewish-American experience, not the African-American experience and how it either parallels or identifies with the African-American experience.

This book is far from being a masterpiece or required reading. However, the topic is interesting and I only hope that others will be willing to tackle this issue of "White-privilege", perceived & real, within the Jewish community with more seriousness and depth.

This is not my English!

I am currently using this book in studying English as a review and I must say that this book is so chock-full of errors that if I had no previous knowledge of English I might be in danger of spending the rest of my life lacking a good working knowledge of grammar. An example of the mistakes in this book would be that it states that "tender" and "lush" are both nouns of quality. They are not. Another example would be that "childhood" is a concrete noun--the book itself states that "concrete nouns refer to persons, places, and objects that you can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste." Childhood concrete? I think not. It amazes me that this book is in its fourth edition and still contains so many mistakes. I'm only on the ninth lesson and have found many more mistakes. My recommendation for anyone looking for a guide on grammar is to look elsewhere.
