Barry Richmond, managing director and founder of High Performance Systems, Inc. directs 35 professionals in the creation and delivery of new software products and services. He consults to many business, government, and educational institutions around the world, principally in the areas of systems thinking and strategy. He has worked with organizations such as Apple, McKinsey, IBM, and HP, among many others. Barry has a PhD in system dynamics from the MIT Sloan School of Management; a master's degree in operations research from Case Western Reserve; an MBA from Columbia University; and a BA from Syracuse University.

Don't Waste Time or Money on This One

First it should be understood that this is really a pamphlet not a real paperback. At $16.95+s&H this 23 page paper is hardly a "gem" although it is as pricey as one. This aside, if you are trying to find out about systems thinking, you won't find it here. What you get is a rehash of the scientific method with managerial buzz words added for marketability. The whole paper seems to be written for those permanently damaged by the MBA experience. There is no definition of systems science, which deals with the constructs of knowledge not the content. If we are to accept the author's de facto definition of systems thinking=scientific method then the whole field has gotten smaller. There is no discussion of attractors,complexity, the role of chaos, or business as a complex adaptive system. Instead we are treated to "forest thinking" (wholistic thinking) and "operational thinking" (causality)reduced to 2-3 pages for the executive that is too busy to read but more than willing to obscure the thinking process with more management speak du jour.
If you really want to understand the systems approach do the homework. Read "Facets of Systems Science" by George J. Klir which will give you a background of the field. "Harnessing Complexity" by Robert Axlerod and Michael D. Cohen is a must if you want to develop a systems approach within an organization. If you really feel intimidated by the field a good introductory book is "The Art of Systems Thinking" by Joseph O'Connor and Ian McDermott. The latter is too light weight to help you do more than orient yourself and find more meatier content.

Advancing Design -

Richmond's highly descriptive and lucid presentation is recommended for an advanced design pedagogy right along with Bloom's Taxonomy and Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory. Most relevant to thinking about preferred futures as it offers the "how" of approaching fitness maximizing for survival in complex adaptive systems/organizations. Richmond covers the domains of this broad field from the Operations Research of Churchman and Ackoff through the Dynamics of Forrester and also embracing Cybernetics II of notables such as Gregory Bateson, Maturana & Varela and others. A single evening of intense reading with long-term rewards for enlightened leadership (designing the designer) into the future. Richmond is to be lauded in that he keeps in mind that Systems Thinking is not a "quick fix" technique to be applied to complex problems. A gem! Of course, you can always read "Facets of Systems Science" by George J. Klir at $137.50 for the full scoop.

The concise statement of systems thinking

One has to wonder why this reprint would command such a price (about $16 US at the time of this writing)...because the compilation of material here is worth it especially if you are a innately systems thinker and would like to reconcile your intuitions with current practice of systems science.

There are seemingly too many advertised modeling approaches that turn out to be the antithesis of systems thinking. These methods typically describe a succession of detail thinking ad hoc tasks that are somehow stitched together. However, this little booklet provides an much better intellectual basis for a qualitatively different approach based on a system approach.

For those of you not faced with getting students to think using a systems approach, you may feel like the material is intuitive, but common sense is not always so common when you are trying to explain the subject. This booklet will greatly help in this task.

unbelievably helpful guide

I was pretty lucky to find this preparation book. If you have ANY questions about the IELTS writing part of the exam - this book will answer it. It saved me a lot of time, as it literally has everything chewed up for every IELTS academic candidate. It is different from all the other books of this kind, because it actually teaches you how to answer the questions. If you are serious about improving your IELTS knowledge and skills, I recommend this book. It won't do the IELTS exam for you (just like no book does) but shows you clear steps to follow. And you can't get confused, as it teaches you everything step by step. Other books are just overloaded with useless information. This book explains how to answer the questions correctly, as it practically shows you how to nail the IELTS writing exam.
It is a well presented preparation book. I think it will help anyone, because it helped my friend too (and he has problems keeping his focus on anything).

Compact and helpful

This is by far the best guide line for IELTS writing I came across. It gives you a clear idea about the structure of the writing and possible variations. It provides useful tips, formulas and expressions and example writings. Concrete, bright and without 'beating around the bush' motivation kind of takings. Very very helpful indeed.

This book is the perfect tool for getting high scores. There are lots of example essays and practice questions within this book. It's a step by step kind of guide that is so informative. I don't regret buying this, it's invaluable. I just regret that I didn't get something like this before now. It was very well written and easy to get to grips with, I am so happy that this was recommended to me. I can't thank whoever wrote this enough, as it has helped me to helped me to understand.

Do not purchase the Kindle version!

There is not much to say about the quality of this sociology classic. This is obviously a very important book, that shaped sociological thinking as we know it today. It is very well written, and is a must-read for any student of sociology, and perhaps even social sciences at large.

Yet, my negative review is specifically aimed at the Kindle version of this book: whoever made the adaptation of this book to version had done a very poor job! The paragraphs break at random points, sometimes in the middle of a sentence; some words are misspelled, with periods replacing one or several letters, leaving the reader guessing what the original word was; and most importantly - the tables are completely illegible. I don't know if it is a problem with the scan, but on my Kindle paperwhite it was impossible to decipher the words and numbers and make sense of the quoted data in basically all of the tables in the book.
This is highly disappointing, especially as this version seems to be made and sold by Amazon itself. I hope they will fix it soon, and update the version for all kindle users who already purchased this book.

It's GREAT. I use the word search on my e-edition ...

As a person with an undergraduate degree in sociology and a Ph.D. in sociology, I am VERY familiar with Durkheim's SUICIDE. I, of course, have a hard copy of the book.

The problem with the hard copy is it lacks an index. For me, I really need an index for my current research. As a result, I purchased a Kindle edition of this classic research study. It's GREAT. I use the word search on my e-edition and use my hard copy to search the pages around my word search. Believe it or not, it has been a great time saver.
