This peppy, somewhat pop-psych book argues that we don't have to change what we eat as much as how, and that by making more mindful food-related decisions we can start to eat and live better. The author's approach isn't so much a diet book as a how-to on better facilitating the interaction between the feed-me messages of our stomachs and the controls in our heads. In their particulars, the research summaries are entertaining, like an experiment that measured how people ate when their plates were literally "bottomless," but the cumulative message and even the approach feels familiar and not especially fresh. Wansink examines popular diets like the South Beach and Atkins regimes, and offers a number of his own strategies to help focus on what you eat: at a dinner party, "try to be the last person to start eating." Anyone who's tried to follow a strict eating regimen knows how futile it sometimes seems. Nutritional science and marketing professor Wansink explores some of the psychological aspects of overeating to explain why we in fact consume more than we believe we do. He advocates weight-loss diets that cut calories by cutting overall consumption, instead of draconian elimination of intake. Wansink finds the greatest value in retraining one's mind and its perceptions by devices such as making sure one's plate contains at least half vegetables or salad. He suggests that a dieter will automatically eat less in social situations by being the last to start eating and the first to finish. He assesses the dangers of food shopping in bulk-portion stores, where customers are virtually begged to overconsume. Wansink's dual approach emphasizing food knowledge and self-knowledge offers a sensible route to permanent weight loss. How "Mindless Eating" CHANGED MY LIFE – or My Eating Habits, anyway.

My genetics are pretty good, so I've never been a "dieting" type person. I've never really watched my weight. And until recently, I had never really attempted to diet at all. But, after already being overweight by about 15 or so pounds, and then gaining an extra 30-some pounds due to doctor-prescribed, drug-induced steroids, I finally had arrived at the point to where I needed to lose (NOTE: At my heaviest, I weighed 192 lbs. – that's borderline "obese" for a man of my height (5' 8"). By the time I started my diet I weighed 183 lbs).

Due to my health, I'm not able to do any real meaningful exercise that can contribute towards any significant calories-burned. So, after doing a little research, I discovered that a PORTION-CONTROL-ONLY type diet would probably work best. After committing to such a diet (June 2015), I found MINDLESS EATING on Amazon. Although not technically a "dieting" book, but more like a book on the science behind food marketing and WHY we eat, it was exactly what I needed. I picked it up about six weeks after my diet had started. Since that time, I have steadily lost 3.5 to 4 pounds a month. That's a slow loss, but it's a healthy loss.

As of this review (Feb. 1, 2016), I have lost 27 lbs. in the last 7 months, and I'm well on my way to hitting the perfect weight range for my age, height and physical-makeup. I credit MINDLESS EATING for giving me the mental boost and an assurance that dieting WITHOUT EXERCISE, and dieting WITHOUT GIVING UP THE FOODS YOU LOVE, is really possible – I am living proof.

If you're new to dieting, have decent weight genetics, are in a position to where you're not able to exercise, and want an easy, fun-filled, no-nonsense, common sense read, then I believe that MINDLESS EATING is for you. Thank you, Mr. Wansink, for writing this book!

UPDATE: My diet which used MINDLESS EATING as a guide to losing weight officially ended around May 1, 2016. I now weigh 143 lbs., with a total 11-month loss of 40 lbs. That's right, I lost a total of 40 POUNDS IN 11 MONTHS with NO EXERCISE and NO EATING OF FOODS I DIDN'T WANT TO EAT. Imagine losing 40 pounds in less than a year, eating only the foods you love. One short year from now you can be looking back at yourself and thinking – that didn't take so long!

I am now maintaining my weight with the lessons I've learned (many from this book), and plan on using these lesson as way to always maintain the ideal weight for my particular body height and makeup. If I can do it, YOU CAN DO IT!

A good read, but nothing groundbreaking

There are a lot of books out there about changing habits, improving your life and restructuring things so that you'll be able to control your impulses and urges better. I liked Wansink's style of writing, his anecdotes and the numerous studies that he's done. He is pretty much the definitive expert on consumer behavior, and a lot of books ("Power of Habit", "Switch", "Willpower", etc.) make references to his work.
There's nothing terribly new, although I think this guy was probably the originator of a lot of the progression towards self-help and changing your life books. His stories are quite interesting, but I think it's still not quite so clear how you would go about putting his ideas into practice.
Wansink suggests that we make small changes into our lives, a 100-200 calorie reduction from our diet so that we gradually lose weight without even knowing it. The problem with that is that often 100-200 calories will pop up to take place of the eliminated calorie threat. It's like the Lernaean Hydra--cut off one head and more temptations come in.
I would recommend this book as good general reading, but don't expect it to change your life.

Life changing insights.

I read the Kindle version of this book during lunchbreaks at McDonald's over a period of a few weeks.

Although not a diet book per se, I used the understandings I gained from this book to lose 15 pounds in three months without changing my activity level, only by cutting back on my unnoticed overeating.

Painless way to get back to a better weight, and may provide further incentive to move forward with other changes based upon the empowering feeling of success.

I explained some of what I learned from this book to my wife and she has lost ten pounds WITHOUT READING THE BOOK! It was startling to learn the effect of "one more cookie" or a daily Mocha Frappe when added to an already over-rich calorie count.

The stark contrast between the time required on a treadmill to burn 150 calories compared to the time it takes to eat a 300 calorie glazed donut or add a chocolate milkshake to the burger and fries was the turning point.

A purely informative book, no agenda beyond giving you food for thought. (sorry). Highly recommended.

In a fourth conversation, with University of Heidelberg classics professor Glenn W. Most, Gadamer argues for the vital importance of the Greeks for our contemporary thinking. In the next, the philosopher reaffirms his connection with phenomenology and clarifies his relation to Husserl and Heidegger in a conversation with London philosopher Alfons Grieder. In the final interview, with German Nazi expert Dorte von Westernhagen, Gadamer describes his life as a struggling young professor in Germany in the 1930s and refutes accusations of his complicity with the Nazis. These conversations are a lucid introduction for readers new to the philosopher's thought, and for experts they present an invaluable commentary on Gadamer's most important themes.

Heroing for fun and profit

I thought I'd like this book when I saw the cover and read the title. Now that I've read it, I know I was wrong -- I LOVE this book.

This is a saga about professional heroing. That's right. The hero business has gone pro. You can even buy and sell hoard futures -- the chance that a given hoard will produce great loot. There's heroing contracts. And guilds. And accountants. And so many other fun little details. But the most important of those are the NPCs -- the former enemies of light who have gotten themselves papers and are now employed by the light and no longer attackable. It calls into question just what is a villain and what is a hero.

The story centers around a group of unwilling adventures variously "convinced", by blackmail, bribery or any other means necessary to take a quest for an unlucky goddess. They're a motley bunch -- the experienced members are drunks and cowards and the inexperienced members are just as likely to get them all killed as to get themselves killed. Somehow they blunder their way to success, only to discover that this is only the beginning of the true heroing.

A marvelous adventure and fun besides.

Mr. Pike, Your Nerd is Showing

We find ourselves outsourcing our adventures. I mean 'us,' as a society. The media is at an all time high in the movies and games department. Stories are made by corporations. Indie companies flourish, it's true, but the market is becoming saturated with low cost, and low quality, titles. Everyone is out for a few dollars. Me too.

This isn't the way it used to be. I used to gather with my friends, pack snacks, get a comfy chair, a #2 pencil, and then vigorously prepare myself for...

An Adventure. Our own adventure.

And, so did Mr. Pike.

It shows.

In Orconomics we have themes of 'getting back up again.' The fallen hero, staggering back to his feet. We have corporate politics, complex conspiracies, and some wonderful world building in a red-tape strewn fantasy setting. All of this is admirably done with a mind for flow and excellent structuring. Pike knows how to plan a book. Lucky for us all, he also knows how to write one.

Characters come alive with his touch, winking at fantasy staples (quite literally in the Bard's case) and adding needed depth and humor. Needed, because the story is shockingly rife with dark themes that are tactfully handled.

All of this is possible because, like I said, Pike was and is a gamer. No, not a headset-adorned man-child basking in the glow of an FPS at three in the morning (Though, he could be). A GAMER. Armed with a pen, some paper, an imagination, and more source books than any single person should ever have to own.

Thank goodness.

This influence is the crux of the sly humor, directed towards old RPG junkies and new cRPG-ers alike. It shines through in his use of party dynamics, their fun jabs at one another, their tactics. This man knows his stuff. He grabs these elements, and adds life and personality. Meaning, he has spent time away from the table and venturing into the outside world, living.

I was enthralled in the craftsmanship.

The inner nerd, however, is a two edged sword.

For all his purposeful winks and nods and open guffaws there are a few moments where that berserker of a fanboy rages out. A few melodramatic moments. A few easily forecasted emotional punches. Things Mr. Pike probably loves in his entertainment, but needs to bridle in order to keep control of his book, which otherwise shows great restraint in its craftsmanship, knowing just how far it can push a joke before it should back away.

Also. Typos. Embarrassing typos. They weren't all that often, and we all have them, but they were apparent here. Get out that fine combed brush.

So, I end this review on a bitter note? Never. I gave it five stars. Amazon says this means "I love it." Because, I do. I laughed, I cried, I jumped out in anger at the corporate machine and its cruelty. I gloried in a message that is all too true today. Games are dumbing down. Story stops mattering. We aren't true heroes, but exterminators.

Pull out some paper (or an electronic device) and join Mr. Pike for an adventure. He's already working on his next book, and it's going to be a good one.

An engaging adventure tale that hits close to home.

A witty adventure with a satirical bent, this book explores a world where adventuring drives the economy and shares of prospective loot are sold before the dragon is even slain.

Pike weaves a fun and touching story of a rag-tag group of unlikely heroes (with plenty of baggage) thrown together to recover some curious marble statues. I enjoyed watching the characters interact, grow, fail, win, and lose, while learning more about this curiously familiar money-driven world.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy Dungeons and Dragons (or any fantasy role-playing game), and/or Terry Pratchett.

This book presents an intensive discussion of the cultures, histories, and contemporary lives of members of the First Nations of North America. Following an introduction (Chapter One), is an overview (Chapter Two) of historical processes that have affected indigenous peoples since about 1500. Both Chapters One and Two discuss the complexity of population statistics that in the past and present have seriously undercounted Native communities and individuals. The book is thereafter divided into eight regional parts (Northeast, Southeast, Plains, Great Basin, Southwest, California, Northwest Coast, and Subarctic and Arctic). Each part begins with an overview chapter followed by one (or in some cases two) chapters that deal in detail with a First Nation within the region. The book concludes (Chapter Twenty-three) with a review of contemporary indigenous economic and political issues and also summarizes current economic and social data collected by the governments of Canada and the United States.

Moving and informative . . .

I purchased this book as a second required reading book for a Humanities college course I recently took. I was surprised how engrossed I became in each Native American testimony. There were informative, moving, heartbreaking, and humorous testimonies on every page. I found myself reading some of the testimonies a 2nd and 3rd time.
