About the Author
Mandy Miles is an award-winning newspaper columnist, reporter and freelance writer who has been living and writing in Key West, Florida since 1998. Her award-winning "Tan Lines" column appears Sundays in The Key West Citizen newspaper, offering a humorous and sarcastic look at Key West and the chaos of everyday life. Two volumes of her "Tan Lines" columns have been published in book form and have sold more than 5,000 copies. Her most recent book, "Key West Dos & Don'ts: 100 Ways to Look Like a Local" provides an insider's guide to island etiquette and a candid view of local life in a tourist town. Miles grew up at the Jersey Shore in Ocean City, living and longing for those three magical months of summer. Mandy earned a writing degree from Elon University in North Carolina. During a college spring break trip that no one remembers all that clearly, she fell in love with Key West. Mandy discovered the American island of endless summer, where hot nights, cold drinks and colorful characters provided enough education, insight and insanity to keep her notebook filled. She accepted a job with the Key West Citizen newspaper a month after graduation in 1998, and upon arrival, ceremoniously discarded the ice scraper from the trunk of her car. From the Ground Up.

Mandy Miles knows her town like a cop knows her beat. I subscribe to the Key West Citizen just to read her Sunday column, "Tan Lines." This book is a jocular, entertaining, practical guide to flying below the radar and living it local. On your next visit don't leave home without it and let your new sunburn be your only giveaway.

Don't Bother

This book, and I hate to describe it as such, is a collection of one sentence bumper sticker pearls of wisdom that will in no way add to a vistor's experience coming to Key West. Having lived in Key West previously, I still tend to read things about the rock. This was a waste. Gems like "Don't argue with bouncers in the bars" or "Don't give the cops on Duval Street a hard time" give you a flavor. The author also shamelessly shills for her relatives' businesses and the paper where she works. You'd be much better off reading one edition of the Citizen than this book. The "Volume One" notation brings a shudder.

About the Author

Jeff Dike, an engineer at Intel, is author and maintainer of User Mode Linux. Well known throughout the Linux technical community, he has been active in Linux kernel development for more than five years. He holds a degree in Computer Science and Engineering from MIT.

When I started the User Mode Linux (UML) project in 1999, I had no idea how large a project it would become or how much of my time it would end up consuming. As time went on, the UML user base grew, and people found new ways to use it. As a result of their requests, UML contains a number of features that would never have occurred to me.

This book concentrates on the use of UML rather than its internals or plans for the future. I've tried to make it as easy as possible to get started with UML and put to good use all of the features my users induced me to add. Of course, I couldn't resist going into how UML works and what I have planned for its future. That would be too much to ask of any developer of any project. I hope this content adds to the book and the readers' understanding and appreciation of UML.

solid book, about much more than just UML

I've read several of the books in Bruce Peren's Open Source Series, and this is by far the best. I read it cover-to-cover and enjoyed the author's relaxed and informative writing style.

The book does a good job of describing UML configuration options and facilities. But where it really shines is in the ancillary material, covering the whys and hows of other subsystems that work in conjunction with UML. For example, I found the treatment of network trouble-shooting that is interspersed with the UML networking section to be very well-done and useful beyond UML alone. Another high point is the information about kernel memory management (in conjunction with the discussion of tt, skas0 and skas3). But by far, the most enjoyable and impressive section of the book is the last two chapters in which the author challenges the reader to think about the wider implications of OS virtualization - for example why you might want to embed an instance of Linux inside another application that is in turn running on Linux (or even inside another UML).

I agree with the comment made by another reviewer that it would have been helpful to spend more time covering how to bootstrap a UML instance. (Hint: Chapter 1.5 - The transition between chapter 1 and chapter 2 is somewhat abrupt.) However, there are numerous other resources covering how to get UML running initially, and the author more than makes up for this short-coming with other (and in my opinion, more interesting) topics.

In summary, it's much more than just another dry, narrowly-focused subject treatment, and I found the author's style and open discussion of design decisions refreshing.

User Mode Linux (UML) is one of several virtual operating system technologies offered today. Most of these technologies emulate a physical piece of hardware. On that hardware, an operating system of choice can be loaded. UML is different in that instead of creating a virtual piece of hardware, UML creates a virtual operating system.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The book consists of thirteen chapters. The first few chapters are a good overview of UML, covering the basics of creating and accessing a virtual instance of a linux operating system. The middle chapters go deeper into UML configuration, covering network configurations, multiple network interfaces and managing all of these virtual operating systems from the central host. The final chapters cover more advanced topics, compiling UML from source, performance tuning considerations, and examples of different ways to use UML. There is even a section on how to build a cluster of virtual linux servers using Oracle's ocfs2. An extremely interesting idea for companies or groups who would like to try out a cluster configuration without having to make a large investment in hardware.

PROS

I found this book interesting and filled with good information. It helps that the author of the book is also the creator of UML. It was nice to see a lot of information on not only how to do something, but also the reasons why things were done they way they were. I would recommend the book for anyone interested in virtualization technology in the open source arena.

CONS

There is not a lot of comparison to all of the other similar technologies like Vmware or Xen. I would not recommend this book to someone wanting to choose between the different technologies.

Learn User Mode Linux from its developer

UML is a great tool for all sorts of applications and projects, but the biggest attraction for me is the opportunity to learn more about the Linux kernel itself.

This book covers UML in depth, but also includes the thinking process Jeff Dike went through in its development and discusses the mistakes and trade-offs he made. You'll learn quite a bit about the kernel just from reading this and of course once you have it running, you can learn even more.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. My only complaint is that the book assumes your Linux came with UML installed and doesn't even tell you what RPM you need if it didn't - it's user_mode_linux and you can find that and everything else you need at [...]

All illustrations are in black and white, not color! Get the ASA publication by the same name for color!

This is the black and white version of this publication. ASA publishes what looks like the exact same book but the illustrations are in color, which really does make quite a lot of difference. I already made some notations in my FAA copy, but will probably get the ASA version. Wondering if there is an update in the works though.

Ideal having a hard copy laying around

In addition to my owning digital copies (iOS and Android), I thought it was best to keep a hard copy laying around. My only complaint is the font size is too small (hence the 1 Star ding)! Would rather having more pages in the text versus having to strain my eyes.

It's like the show, only written down! Skins the novel is awesome!

I started watching Skins late last year only being able to catch repeats of series 3 on BBC America. But instantly I fell in love with the show and craved more! So I find out there's Skins the novel and of course I got it right away. I was entertained from cover to cover, I could not put the book down! It has the same format as the show with each chapter following a different character til the final chapter titled "Everyone". I found every chapter fascinating and pulling me in as if I was watching the show itself. It has a period of 3 weeks throughout the book and it takes place during the summer after series 3.

It starts off with the misadventures of Effy and her mom in Venice, we get to know another side of Effy but she always manages to sink back into certain habits. Then we see Naomi and Emily together just before Emily has to leave and be tortured by her twin Katie in France. I love the interaction between the twins you get to see a closeness that we've never seen before. Also there's a bit of sentiment in Katie that makes you feel for her and realize why she has up a shield towards certain people. Naomi misses Emily while she's away but she also wonders about her own future but plays it off so Emily wont get hurt. Thomas and Pandora are lovey dovey but Panda can't seem to get over the fact that Thomas isn't like Cook at all. He's a great guy that cares about her deeply but she's insecure and thinks he only wants one thing. Cook is up to his same old tricks of "I'm cool and I'm untouchable", but we all know how much of a facade that is. Freddie is the voice of reason as always putting Cook in his place and still longing to be with the girl of his dreams (you know who). JJ is stuck with his 2 bff's and has to referee between the two, but I want JJ to find that right girl for himself. That's just a bit of what's in the book, you have to read it to really understand what I mean. You will love it I think Ali Cronin did an amazing job with this book! As Lily Loveless (Naomi) said "It's like the show, only written down."

So I wont spoil it for anyone but its a must read as it ties up all the loose ends leading into series 4 which has already started! So if you havent bought this yet its a must read for any true fan of Skins. You wont be disappointed!

I'm so blown away by series 3 and Skins the novel that I still have yet to see series 1 and 2! I wish they would keep this cast goin, they're very fascinating!

A bit more graphic than the show, surprisingly

I really enjoy "Skins". I don't like the current cast as much as I liked the first, but I still like them and look forward to series 3 on DVD (Hello? Anyone in charge of this? When is that going to happen, please? I don't want to have to order a region 2 set!).

This novel has everything in it that I like from the show, including all the characters, a nice bit of naughtiness and plenty of humor, though the jokes don't really work as well on the printed page as they work on the screen.

Everyone you know and love from there series is here and up to all their usual antics. Cook and Freddie are in a bizarre content to see who can hook up with the most girls with poor JJ as a judge (and just wait until you see what happens when Cook suggests a threesome with him, Freddie and a girl). Between sexual encounters Freddie mopes around being all emo. Meantime, his would-be girlfriend, Effy, is in Venice also moping around and being emo, though not having nearly the same level of sex.

Someone who is getting the same level of sex, and then some, is Katie, still struggling to deal with Emily's relationship with Naomi. The two sisters are off in France while Naomi is at home pining away.

And as for Panda and Thomas? Well, they might as well not even be in the story, honestly. They're pushed far to the background and hardly do anything, though their relationship does move forward a bit.

This isn't the greatest book ever written, but it is a good extension to series three and something to hold me over until series four comes along.
