Principles of Forensic Toxicology

If you are interested in forensic toxicology, Principles of Forensic Toxicology is a great addition to your library. The book is desinged for an undergraduate course of one semester. This book is well-written by renown scientists and provides an excellent introduction to toxicology. It provides detailed information on instruments and the principles and theories of their use, drugs of abuse, alchols, postmortem toxicology, and general principles of toxicology. This book further solidified my knowledge of toxicology & will be an excellent source for future questions and problems.

this book is an ok read and is quite helpful when trying to get your head round the vast field that is forensic science but you wouldnt want to read it more than once.

i recommend crime scene to court, the principles of forensic science which is much more interesting

A Remarkable Story

What a truly remarkable story! I have to admit I’m one of those people that is pretty ignorant about the kinds of things that go on in other parts of the world like the child prostitution described in Matt Ropers Highway to Hell: The Road Where Childhoods are Stolen.

I’m also ashamed to admit that there is a part of me that would rather keep it that way. The unimaginable things that occurred and were retold by Roper are things that I would rather not know. But the bottom line is that they do happen and luckily there are people like Matt Roper and Dean Brody that find it unacceptable and take the time to do something about it.

Roper and Dean travel along a Brazilian Highway BR-116 and re-tell the stories of all the girls that they meet along the way. It’s shocking to me that prostitution happens with girls that aren’t even in their teens yet. It’s truly the ugliest, darkest side of human nature and it really broke my heart to read this story. But it also inspired me to learn that there are people that will uproot their entire lives to make a difference in the lives of strangers.

Roper and Dean make it their mission in life to get these girls off the streets and help bring change. It’s not without challenges and heartbreak and roadblocks along the way. But the devil uses those things to stop people from bringing about the necessary changes.
Having a daughter, I can’t even imagine these kinds of horrific things happening to her and I sometimes forget how blessed I am to live where we live. The fact that these girls are subjected to this lifestyle and even pushed into it by their own mothers to help survive is disgusting and heartbreaking.

Highway to Hell is one of those books that leaves you saddened, yet inspired and forever changed.

This book will break your heart

Reading this book will break your heart. It reveals a world I didn't want to believe existed.

There is a picture postcard image of Brazil, sun, sea, and samba, that most foreigners only ever see. But there is a very different Brazil just a few blocks away, a world of child prostitution along BR-116, the “highway to hell.”

Matt Roper, a successful journalist at the Daily Mirror, received an email from Dean Brody, a Canadian country music star. Brody had just read a book Roper had written years before about prostitution in Brazil. The two decided to travel along Brazil's BR-116. What they found was an epidemic of child prostitution.

This book is overwhelming. The government overlooks child prostitution because it would reduce tourist income. Parents often sell their children into prostitution as a source of income. Many of the girls start young, at age ten, as it is something their mother and grandmother did. The girls think there is something wrong with them if they do not have a sexually active life by the age of twelve. They are part of a warped culture where girls think that selling their body for sex is cool. Brazil's federal highway police recently identified 272 places along BR-116 where underage girls are known to be sold for sex. That means for the BR-116 length of 2,819 miles, there are children being sold for sex about every ten miles. Roper writes, “It was an epidemic of child prostitution infecting every single town and village, right down to the smallest community.” (163) As one child councillor told them, “Child prostitution's just part of life here. People who have grown up here don't see it like you and I do, even the Christians. Most people have stopped seeing it at all.” (168) Hundreds of girls are forced into the sex trade by their own families. Mothers swap their daughters for a bag of beans or a packet of cigarettes. Girls aged twelve and thirteen are dying of AIDS. The councillor said girls she had cared for one day climbed into a truck along BR-116 never to return. (23)

Roper and Brody decided to reach out to one community, Medina, and the young girls there selling themselves to prostitution. They bought a house that had a room large enough for a dance studio. They painted it pink. Meninadanca was born. Now, in this one community, there is a welcoming place where girls can find a different life. Their vision is to replicate what they have done in Medina in other towns along the BR-116. They are determined to press forward until child prostitution is no longer tolerated in Brazil.

A very important book

Brazil's 2700 miles long national highway BR 116 is the main north south road in Brazil. In Matt Roper's deeply disturbing book, Highway to Hell, we learn the very sordid truth that has lead this road to be called "The Highway to Hell". It is they story of exploitation of thousands of girls, some as young as nine, as roadside and brothel prostitutes. It is also the story of the result of the destruction of local culture by international commerce and the terrible impact this has had on the most vulnerable people in this society, young girls. It is also part of the price to pay for massive deforestation and destruction of small homesteads. The people who have lived along this road for generations (many child prostitutes were the third generation in their family to work the road many were pushed into the business by their grandmothers) are ethnographically a mixture of descendants of Brazilian Indians and African slaves. They are the products of 100s of years of vicious rapine exploitation.

Prostitution is legal in Brazil but child prostitution is not. Maybe some of the girls in on BR 116 will end up in an expense sauna in Rio but I think it is only a very few. As depicted by Roper, prostitution has become so prevalent along BR 116 because of all the long haul truck drivers. The descriptions from the girls Roper interviewed of climbing into trucks are chilling and every girl knew someone who disappeared working the road. Maybe she just moved on down the road with a trucker. Maybe. When asked why they prostituted themselves many girls said it was to buy fancy cell phones and cheap imitations of fashionable clothes. This shows the insidious reach of consumerism. In a kind of circle of death, forests and small farms were destroyed forcing people into shacks along the road. This was done to make the rich richer. Then the desperately poor totally uneducated people along the road are bombarded with ads for stuff they cannot afford. The ads are calculated to appeal to teens. Then long haul trucks carrying the goods of brazil, often hardwood being shipped out, come along and a market is created for commercial sex with thousands of ready workers. In the worst families, working the road is seen as the normal thing for a 13 year old girl to do.

The "plot" of the book centers around the efforts of Matt Roper and a friend and their spouses to help as they can some of the girls working the road. Of course the road prostitution is spreading aids throughout the region as almost all the clients are married. Child prostitution requires the police turn at least a blind eye and brothels, which often essentially hold girls in bondage, require police and political protection. This is not an academic sociological study. It is an up close look at something very evil.

We do meet older women, in their early twenties who survived the road and we meet Brazilians trying to help. We get to know some of the girls and part of the heartbreak of this book is how normal they seem. Imagine a world where your mother pushes you to get a summer job, not in the mall but sexually servicing truck drivers (truck drivers in Brazil come off really poorly here) you meet while standing out on the road. By no means are all the girls pushed into it, many hear of the big to them money they can make and willingly do it. We meet a heart broken father with no means to stop his teenage daughters from working the road.

A few girls can be helped by efforts of good people like Matt Roper but I do not personally see any real changes coming.

Another essential piece in building your structural geology book collection. Everything you needed to know about folds and faults. Occasionally goes overboard on fold and fault classification, but aids greatly in kinematic analysis of rock deformation. Great text for Advanced Structure class!
