About the Author

Richard R. Kibbe served his apprenticeship in the shipbuilding industry and was graduated as a journeyman marine machinist. He holds an Associate in Arts degree in applied arts from Yuba Community College with an emphasis in machine tool technology. He also holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the California State University with an emphasis in machine tool manufacturing technology.

Mr. Kibbe has considerable job machine shop experience as well as community college and industrial teaching experience and is the author and co-author of several publications in the chain tool manufacturing field.

Roland O. Meyer spent the first 20 years of his career in the metal-working industry as a tool and die maker, machinist and worked in machine design and manufacturing. He completed his apprenticeship as a tool and die maker at Siemens in Germany and continued there as a journeyman building progressive punching dies.

He then worked in die shops in Toronto and Windsor, Canada before moving to Chicago employed as a gage maker at Ford Motor Company. Following this stint, he was in charge of the US army machine shops in Korea and Italy for five years. When he returned to the US, he worked in a manufacturing company designing and building experimental machines used in the timber and plywood industry. He next entered academia and became the lead instructor at Lane Community College’s Manufacturing Technology program in Eugene, Oregon, where he taught for 25 years. As CNC became the new method in machining, he developed a CNC curriculum and program. When CAM (Computer Aided Machining) became available he also developed a state of the art CAM program with the assistance of a local software company.

John E. Neely grew up in the Pacific Northwest and entered the Army to serve in World War II. The life John E. Neely is characterized by hard work, a variety of successes, and mentoring many others who became a part of his life.

Over the years Mr. Neely provided himself with a broad education and professional training through reading, a correspondence course in mechanical engineering, and good use of opportunities throughout his career. He became a master machinist, a mechanical engineer, a hydraulic engineer, and eventually an instructor at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon.

During his time as instructor he collaborated with others to develop highly successful course materials based on the individualized instruction approach. He and his collaborators wrote and had published several textbooks based on those materials. Those books continue to be in use nationally and internationally. After the death of his wife, he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in April 2000 to be with his son and his family. There, for the three years until his death, he enjoyed the company of family and friends.

Warren White apprenticed as an Optical Instrument Maker with Land-Air, Inc. After military service with the Army Air Defense Board he obtained a graduate degree in Psychology at Clark University. His interest in both learning theory and machine tools led to employment at Foothill College in the Engineering Department.

Warren White initiated the Machine Tool Technology program at De Anza College after an extensive survey of Silicon Valley manufacturing firms.� He was the Director of a California State-funded program to develop an Individualized Machinist Curriculum in conjunction with several California Community Colleges and Lane Community College in Oregon. He also initiated the California Community Colleges’ Multimediamobile which operated between several California Community Colleges to develop individualized instructional media in several technical disciplines.

He was the lead author and editor for Machine Tools and Machining Practices Volumes I and II�published by John Wiley and Sons. He later taught Industrial Engineering classes at San Jose State University. He is certified by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers as a Manufacturing Engineer. After retiring from teaching he did voluntary Assistive Technology work with the Easter Seal Society in Santa Cruz, California, in a special program sponsored by IBM. He returned to work as a Quality Engineer for Seagate Technology, and obtained certification as a Quality Auditor. He started Seagate Technology on the path to achieving ISO 9001 certification.

an introductory text

This book and the workbook were required for a machine shop class I took. The Amazon description is pretty accurate. It is written for someone in a vocational training program who will be working in the industry rather than a home workshop. The book covers a lot of material, but doesn't go into depth on any of it. Its a pretty good introductory book, but its kind of expensive. I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't required for the class. If you are just interested in learning to operate a certain machine, like a mill or lathe, or if you are interested in machining as a hobby I think there are probably better books. I am giving it 3 stars because of the high price, and many of the photos are not high enough quality, especially considering the price.

My teacher calls this book the bible. Because were going to need it in the future. But the book is a good book. It could be confusing at times but you should just ask your professor to clear it up. I learned alot of new things because of this book.

A collection of common sense ideas that are not that common

This book is a collection of common sense ideas but common sense is not that common. This book presents 7 key ideas and provides examples of how to apply these ideas in the real world:

Primacy principle - people remember more of the first things they hear or see. The brain remembers better things from the beginning of a learning period.

Recency principle - we remember more of the last things we see or hear. The The brain remembers better things from the end of a learning period.

The Von Restorff/Imagination Effect - the brain remembers things that stand out during the learning period. Multisensory images are great.

The Association Effect- we remember whatever is linked or connected, especially to ourselves and our own worlds.

The Understanding and Misunderstanding Effect - it is possible to remember accurately that which never happened. This relates to the brain's phenomenal ability to imagine, daydream, create and associate.

The How Mind Mapping Can Change Your Life Book
By 60+ and still having fun
This book goes far beyond the earlier mind mapping books by Mr Buzan and puts the work into the context of using the technique to improve many different areas of your life at different stages in development. This is not a psychology book (although it sometimes strays a little into my field) but it is a great set of tools with great relevance for influencing development as you learn to use visual thinking and non-linear methods to see the world somewhat differently. The exposition of the assumptions and the methodology is quite readable and admirably concise. Highly recommended. Good advise but not very practical.

I gave this book a 3.5 because it satisfied the reason why i bought it, it improved my memory. However, i removed a star because some of the techniques in this book are less then practical. I suppose if you want to be a memory champion you could apply all the techniques in this book all the time but otherwise you'd be kinda silly to be constantly associating old information with new information is strange ways in an attempt never to forget anything. That's another reason why i removed a star, i just summed the entire book up in on sentence; associate old information with new information in strange way frequently. I guess that requires some explanation but anything that simple shouldn't cost so much.

I have been in the business analytics domain delivering SAS based predictive analytics solutions for the past seven years and I wish I had this book at the beginning of my career. There are text books on analytics and data mining which focus on the theoretical part without explaining the application side and then there are cookbooks which promise ready made recipes. This book strikes a fine balance between theory and its practical application to the real world business problems and how SAS can be used as a tool to solve it. The examples and sample datasets help the reader in better understanding of the concepts and its applications. The availability of SAS University Edition where students can actually try out the examples, sweetens the deal further. By following the learning-by-doing style the book takes the reader along each and every step of business analytics in its real world application. I strongly recommend this book for budding analytics professionals and pure SAS programmers who seek a business perspective on real world applied analytics.

I am basically from non-Analytics background. With an appetite to move into Analytics, I looked out for a suitable material that helps me to build on. Fortunately, I got this source. Containing more interpretation of the hull and working of the ship than any publication to date, this book includes a huge mount of very detailed historical, iconographic and archaeological information. The author has interpreted the recovered structure to make it fit the Mary Rose illustrated by Anthony Anthony in 1546. The numerous scale drawings are augmented by technical illustrations with a descriptive index and explanatory views. The number of concepts covered in detail is impressive; all aspects of the ship and how she worked and fought are included, together with a history of the ship and description of life on board. The Anatomy of the Ship Series Is Dead! Long Live the Anatomy of the Ship Series!

"Anatomy of the Ship" has long been one of my favorite book series, and I was quite pleasantly surprised to learn that the first new "Anatomy" in ten years was in the works. This book was originally intended for publication in 2008, but something must have fallen by the wayside. I was awfully disappointed in the "Bismarck" and "Constitution" anatomies, and was hoping that this book might breathe some new life into the series.

How is it? I'd say "pretty good" on the whole. It's not as extraordinarily detailed as some of the better "Anatomies," but it's a step above many of the weaker ones. The inside of the front and back covers are put to good use, presenting fold-out interior and exterior profiles of the hull, and two very nice paintings by Geoff Hunt. The biggest formatting change is the consolidation of the Introduction and Photographs chapters, reducing the amount of cross-referencing required compared with the other anatomies. "The Tudor Warship Mary Rose" contains a great deal more photographs and period artworks of the ship than earlier anatomies, including a large number of photographs of artifacts recovered from the wreck. The quality of the drawings ranges from exceptional to decent. The section on hull construction is probably the most detailed, right down to exploded views of gunport construction, cross-sections of a summercastle knighthead, and structural plans of each deck. Throughout the book are other examples of close-up details, including the lacing of bonnets to the mainsails, the rigging of the masthead of the ship's boat, and three-view drawings of nine types of rigging blocks. The final chapter even includes a set of plans depicting the remains of the ship as currently seen on display in Portsmouth, England.

As exciting as it may be to finally have a brand new "Anatomy," some of the plans are rather bleak looking and lack drawing keys. The plans of the standing and running rigging are probably this book's low point, consisting entirely of three unlabeled 1/192 scale profile views of the ship. The drawings of the ship's guns are very nicely done, but again, not a single one is labeled. I know that any seasoned maritime enthusiast should be able to identify parts of a ship's guns and rigging without any hand-holding, but I can't figure out why so many plans in this book are either completely unlabeled, or rather sparsely so.

Although some of the omissions are rather frustrating, I'm happy to see one more book in this series. Doug McElvogue is the former Senior Research Fellow & Archaeologist of the Mary Rose Trust, so I'd imagine that these plans constitute an exceptionally accurate rendition of how the ship appeared in 1545. In fairness, I wish I could give this book 3 1/2 stars. As an "Anatomy," this is somewhat of a middle tier title. However, there's enough interesting supporting material here to bump up my rating from three to four stars.
