An excellent source of historic nomadic tent information

This book is considered to be one of the leading sources for available information about nomadic tents and their construction. Full of diagrams, line illustrations and construction details, it covers a wide geographic area. Examples of lifestyles and customs help one understand how the cultures' needs drove the implementation of practical designs. An excellent read for anyone serious about tent history, construction, or nomadic lifestyles.

A very good overview of tents used by nomads all over the world including the Arctic and Subarctic. There is sufficient information here to give you a good idea how tents were constructed, although the amount of detail provided varies. In some cases, dimensions are provided though not always. Illustrations in the book are line drawings made by the author. No photographs are provided.
In some cases, these nomadic tents are still in use where the nomadic cultures have been able to hang on to their territories and their nomadic lifestyles. In other cases, such as the North American boreal forests and Arctic, traditional lifestyles are no longer widely practiced and so the tents have disappeared from daily use. A book such as this therefore provides valuable documentation of vanishing technologies.
If you want to use this book as a guide to constructing a replica of a given nomadic tent, you will have to do some experimenting since as the author himself states, this book is not a how-to guide. The information provided comes from other primary sources although the author has apparently built some replicas of tents shown himself. The bio tells us that the author is a carpenter. This experience seems to reflect in the drawings which try to give as much structural detail as was available to the author.

If you are interested in tents and how they work for the nomads, then get this book. Lots of good info and drawings. Very good resource for those who would like to make one, though canvas would be your best bet. Goat hair would be very hard to find.
