While military solutions to social problems take an awful toll in human suffering, the military's gain in wealth and power is apt to make it reluctant to support peace unless funds are cut off. Tiny, overpopulated El Salvador has recently emerged from a savage 13-year civil war that devastated the country. The war, in reality an agrarian movement to rectify the ownership of over half the land by two percent of the people, gave rise to such human rights abuses that thousands were massacred or fled abroad. Protests by women in turn made them aware of their own status as a disadvantaged group. The author herself was transformed from a peasant to an international human rights activist. Those who know Latin America will not be surprised at her story; a similar story is Nidia Diaz's I Was Never Alone: A Prison Diary from El Salvador (Ocean, 1992). For large collections.

Courageous woman uncovers torture, coverups and femicide

While the summary gives away some hints of the book there is a lot more to be covered specifically how Maria Tulsa uncovers how much of the torture, murders and government terrorism in El Salvador was aided by the United States. That's probably what people should focus on the most. Even in today's age the hypocritical points the finger at Iraq and other countries for sponsoring terrorism yet has aided terrorism and dictatorships in places like Argentina, Guatemala, Chile, Nicaragua (Samoza dynasty) and many more country.

Some things never change. Anyhow, as mentioned Maria herself is born not just from a poor family but a poor crazy family. Her mother and father are simply terrible cruel parents who don't give her daughter anything, her siblings abuse her and low and behold it's her Grandmother who is the only person that Maria can honestly call a relative.

Later on she marries, and her husband is murdered by the government and labeled as a terrorist for striking. Maria can't even find her husband's dead body to claim (something that happened in other countries like Argentina where the government exterminated thousands of people yet wouldn't even tell loved ones where their victims bodies where). Simply disgusting. Maria's story is very familiar to people who have done research and have lived through this sort of thing.

She didn't just become a victim but an activist starting the Co-Madres group. Her story is sad but inspirational it really deserves more attention than just the three reviews here on Amazon.com

this is the best book i have ever read. it is very exicting and uplifting. Maria Tula is one of the most courageous individuals i have read about. being a woman i want to use maria as a model for myself and my future daughters. any one who has experiecned domestic violence should read this book because she expereinced and overcame it. please read and recommend this book to women and men.

Just an introduction, but an excellent one

If you are interested in a philosophical analysis of personal identity, you will not find a better introduction than this little volume. It is, however, just an introduction. It raises issues without fully developing them, which is fine, since it does not pretend to be more than an introduction. For the same reason it omits various issues. The most important omitted issue IMO is the view of the Buddha, David Hume, Derek Parfit and doubtless others that personal identity is in a sense an illusion. To get deeper into these issues, I recommend Part III of Parfit's Reasons and Persons.

One quibble: notwithstanding the book's title, it does not discuss immortality. Survival after death is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for immortality.

In this delightful booklet John Perry, a philosophy professor at Stanford, discusses personal identity and immortality. It is implied that immortality is meaningless without personal identity, and therefore almost the entire argument is about personal identity really.

The setting of the dialogue is dramatic: a philosophy teacher, Gretchen, lies dying in a hospital after a motorcycle accident. She is visited by two friends: Sam, a chaplain, and Dave, a former student. She asks them to comfort her and gives them an apparently easy task: to show that it is possible for personal identity to survive the death of the body. She does not ask them for good evidence or some probability estimate of this happening - but just for the logical possibility of the survival of personal identity. In other words she questions whether the idea of personal survival is even coherent, if it makes any sense at all. Of course Sam and Dave find it very difficult to convince her.

I found the dialogue very readable with some flashes of humor, expressions of passion, anger, sadness - the whole lot one would expect in such a setting. And at the same time we get a good philosophical debate. Excellent.

In the second night all three agree that personal identity is contingent on memory, or rather on the continuity of memory, but in a way I found very puzzling they all also immediately agree that there is an important distinction to be made between what one really remembers and what one only seems to remember. This, I think, is a big mistake. There is of course an obvious difference between an atomic explosion and the simulation of an atomic explosion, but as far as experience goes "is" and "seems" are identical. When I see a red apple it makes no sense to wonder whether I may only seem to be seeing a red apple. There is no difference playing chess and simulating the playing of chess. Still, based on the distinction between remembering and seeming to remember Gretchen shoots down all arguments Sam and Dave propose for defending the very possibility of survival of personal identity after the death of the body. But, by that standard, personal identity is not possible even before death. After all how can I be certain that I remember my past? Maybe I only seem to remember what happened yesterday. Gretchen might have answered that the continuity of the body (and particularly of the brain) before death proves that what I remember is real - but then how do I know that yesterday I had the same body I have today? Maybe this too is a wrong memory.

Another error I found in the argumentation is that the continuation of personal identity after the death of the body is imagined only through the recreation of a "heavenly person". This arbitrarily assumes that the "person" disappears at the death of the body and must therefore be recreated somehow - which shows that by "person" Perry (as all three characters in the dialogue agree on that) imagines some kind of body. To be fair in the first night Gretchen has shown that the idea of personal identity without the benefit of a body (i.e. the idea of the "soul") makes not sense because it souls existed we would know nothing about them. This argument is valid but is solipsistic in nature. After all neither can we know anything about other peoples' consciousness and still we assume that other people are conscious; in the same way we can safely assume that other people have souls. In fact I find that for all practical purposes "soul" and "consciousness" can be used interchangeably.

Finally the idea of the possible recreation of a person in heaven is rendered absurd by pointing out that then it would be possible to create several identical heavenly bodies which would negate personal identity. But why is that? On what logical grounds must one assume a link between personal identity and uniqueness of body? This is what we empirically find to be the case in our condition in this life, but it is not logically necessary. I can easily imagine my personal identity experiencing through two bodies. In any case, this 49 page booklet was a joy to read - but also strangely upsetting: I wished I could find a way to insert myself in the book and argue against Gretchen. Which shows how taken I was by the story. Anyway I also learned something about the craft of writing a philosophical dialogue: You never have all characters agree easily on anything. At least one character must question any claim introduced (no matter how obvious it may seem to the writer of the dialogue) and have other characters defend it before continuing.

If you like Philosophy and the Socratic method, you'll love this!

I purchased this book for a college course in Philosophy. I expected it to be boring, but to my surprise it was very interesting. If you want to be a lawyer or politician, you might want to consider purchasing this book. Socrates was brilliant and questioned everything, as dictated by Plato. Also, I am a first time student of Philosophy and before taking the course thought I would not be able to deal with it because I rarely question the things around me--but this book proves that even if you are more of a simple minded person, you can still wrap your thoughts around certain things that Socrates questions that today still have no specific definitions. It is a thin book, with few pages, but it is full of a lot of knowledgeable ideas and concepts that do take some re-reading to fully comprehend Socrate's methods. I highly recommend this book!

Not meant to be in continuity

Wade Wilson's War is not meant to be in continuity so disregard Cory Kerr"s review, it is set in a more realistic world apparently without superpowers. Deadpool is brought to a senate hearing after his team consisting of himself, Domino, Bullseye, and Silver Sable massacre a cartel and several civilians in Mexico. The story is exactly what a Deadpool comic should have, the art was decent, and it has Dogpool pooping out a bomb.It's worth the read for any Deadpool fan.

Not Quite Deadpool's Best, But Still Great!

Wade Wilson's War tells the story of how Deadpool (Wade Wilson) came to be through a series of flashbacks. The twist, the story is told from two different perspectives and it is up to the reader to decide which story is the truth. Could it be the over-the-top patriotic story told by Deadpool himself, or the more believable story from the company that made him the super human he is today. This is a must read for fans of Deadpool.

A look into Deadpool

Deadpool: Wade Wilson’s War, written by Duane Swierczynski (the writer of '2 Past Midnight') and illustrated by Jason Pearson, is a non-continuity story from the Marvel Knight’s imprint. And, following the imprint’s characteristic boiling down of a character down to his or her nature, this comic does exactly that. Want answers about Deadpool? Such as why he uses his red and black mask and why he even uses ‘Deadpool’ as a name? Whether his teammates really were given the names ‘Bullseye’, ‘Domino’, and ‘Silver Sable’? This comic gives just exactly that, and in the purest Deadpool fashion.

The story itself follows Deadpool going before the senate to talk about a massacre in Mexico he is thought to have been a part of, as well as being the only thought survivor of the event. There, he talks about having been a part of a super-secret government programme that gave him his regenerative powers together with his teammates, Bullseye, Silver Sable, and Domino. He talks about his childhood, time at the army, and the experiments to cure the cancer he was diagnosed with. He talks about the past missions he was sent to. All in all, all of his character story and past.

But is this really the truth and all there is to the story? In the truest character of Deadpool, this isn’t all there is to the story, and it is exactly what makes this comic stand out and gain interest. On the surface it seems just another utterly common plot with Deadpool-esque humour on top of it. Thankfully, this isn’t so, and ‘Deadpool: Wade Wilson’s War’ goes straight to Deadpool’s nature. Though the story is a mess, if you look closely it all fits together in the most striking way, making this a definitely fun comic to read for any Deadpool fan.

This story is presented through a series of flashbacks presented from two different prespectives, and leaves it up to the reader to decide which one is the truth. Whether the over-the-top patriotic version told by Deadpool or the realistic one offered by the company which gave him his powers, ‘Deadpool: Wade Wilson’s War’ combines supposed truths together expertly. Offering various versions of the same story without giving away any definitive answer about them, and though it doesn’t really manage to rise to any extraordinary level, it definitely isn’t bad. The art itself is good and reminiscent of past Deadpool comics, and holds true to them in a rather nostalgic way.

Would I then recommend ‘Deadpool: Wade Wilson’s War’? Yes, but particularly to fans of the character who know previous things about it. Though this comic probably doesn’t work well as an introduction to Deadpool himself or people who don’t particularly like his character – there are better comics for that – this one certainly gives entertainment and offers a lot of introspection on the character in a very original way. Though it could have been presented in a very ‘normal’ way, the truth is left up to the reader to choose, and this is what definitely gives this comic an edge over other Deadpool-centred ones and made me enjoy it. It isn’t anything really extraordinary though, and if anything is a bit memorable instead. Though it will definitely be fun to read and will not leave you bored whilst you’re doing so.

As an exposition of Evangelical convictions this book will be useful both in the EFCA and in the broader Evangelical world.

This theological exposition speaks clearly but, as much as possible, without technical theological terms so that it can be profitable for all believers who need to be grounded in the essentials of the faith. Moreover, the theology set forth in this exposition is doxological-that is, it ought to lead us to exalt the greatness and grace of our God. As Paul instructs Timothy, "What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you-guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us" (2 Tim. 1:13-14). Evangelical Convictions was written with the prayer that it may be an instrument of the Spirit to help those in the EFCA, and faithful believers everywhere, to guard, and to bear witness to, the good deposit of the gospel.

If we call ourselves Evangelicals, what do we mean by that? What do we believe, and, more importantly, why? Written as a "fleshing out" of the doctrines of the Evangelical Free Church (and published and marketed by the EFCA), Evangelical Convictions is both a Gospel primer and a textbook for understanding the essentials. It's laid out in a textbook format, so it's easy to use as a reference. But it's written in clear, clean and compelling language, so it's also a good read.
I think it would be a great idea for every Evangelical Free Church to get this book into the hands of its members and attenders, but it's highly recommended for anyone who would like to know more about the "glorious gospel of the blessed God." (1 Tim 1:11)

Contained within this book is a well-researched, well-defined, and well-versed explanation of the theological doctrine behind the statement of faith of the EFCA. If one were to study this academically, it will prove to be an invaluable resource to have as the building blocks to any piece of work by an evangelical believer. Not only does it serve as an academic resource, but it can also be used by anyone who desires to get a strong and comprehensive understanding of the faith and beliefs of evangelicals, specifically the EFCA. I would recommend this to anyone who desires to gain a stronger grasp of the ecclesial roles of the church, the power works and glory of the triune God, and to learn where we as God's creation fit into the picture.

Evangelical Convictions is dense...like a pound cake.

The book is a very dense systematic treatment of 10 major Christian doctrines. It is full of scripture references, theological reflection of each phrase in the statement, explanations of historical theology and the development of Free Church teaching, the drawing of clear boundary lines (affirmations and denials), and much more (including a very helpful appended explanation of how congregationalism functions in the EFCA--great to see that in print). It is the first place I will go to show anyone what we believe.

And it's written in a winsome, humble, warm and yet courageous prose.

It won't be easy for everyone to read. Evangelical Convictions is not full of folksy stories and anecdotes (though there are good illustrations made to explain various points). It is dense, but like a pound cake--thick, rich, and theologically sweet.

Evangelical Convictions is encouraging to me, not just because I agree with everything in it (even the various "balances" struck throughout seem judicious and well put). But also because it points to some theological health in the EFCA.

When the leaders of the EFCA engaged our whole family of churches in a process of revising our statement of faith, I was ultimately encouraged. There were some rocky spots in the process, of course, but the leaders handled the whole thing with strong integrity, humility and courageousness.

I was really pleased to be a part of a family of churches that (among other things) valued doctrine enough to spend a lot of time on it, to improve what was already good, to include as many as could be included without compromising the gospel, and to move from theology to doxology.

Now, there is a book that captures it all.

I chewed on wonderful resource for over a month, reading it in snatches.

That's just the way to enjoy a theological pound cake.
